The news cycle is heavy, to say the least. Which is why every Friday, we hunt for the wins that don’t always make headlines.

This is what we found this week.

New York Mayor just gave every kid permission to stay up for the NBA finals.

The 2026 NBA Finals schedule presented a dilemma. With games tipping off at 8:30 p.m. ET, school-aged Knicks fans faced a choice: sleep before school or watch their team play for a championship. It’s not a situation any kid should have to be in.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani decided to take action. According to Yahoo! Sports, he sat at his desk with schoolchildren this week and signed an executive order suspending bedtimes for kids during the NBA Finals. The order, written in Comic Sans, stated: “It is important for all New Yorkers of all ages to support the Knicks in their championship run. Bedtimes should not impede the ability of New York’s youngest to cheer for the Knicks and watch every second of this historic Championship series.”

On social media, Mamdani posted a video of the signing and wrote: “As Mayor, you’re forced to make many difficult decisions. This was not one of them.”

Meanwhile, in the world of high achievement, a doctor from Morelos just made history on Mount Everest.

On May 20 at 6:30 in the morning, Dr. Alfredo Cruz stood at the summit of Mount Everest. At more than 26,000 feet, in what climbers call the “death zone” where oxygen is scarce, a physician from Cuautla, Morelos, became the first mountaineer from his state to reach the highest peak on the planet.

According to Diario de Morelos, Cruz is only one of about forty Mexicans in history to summit Everest. Months of preparation, physical conditioning, and mental discipline led to that moment at the peak. He had to face temperatures that freeze flesh and terrain that kills experienced climbers. Cruz sent a voice message down the mountain confirming his success and thanking everyone who supported the expedition.

An ICE agent is finally being held accountable.

In January, Venezuelan immigrant Julio Sosa-Celis was running for his life through Minneapolis when ICE agent Christian Castro shot through a door at him. It happened during the enforcement surge that led to raids that left communities terrified. Castro allegedly fired through the front door of the house where Sosa-Celis was hiding.

The Justice Department initially charged Sosa-Celis with assault. But now officials have acknowledged that the officers involved made untruthful statements about the incident. The charges were dropped. This week, according to NPR, Castro was arrested in Texas by federal agents and the Texas Rangers. He faces four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime.

Mexico’s President just announced debt forgiveness for 70,000 farmworkers.

Sheinbaum lanza “Volver a Crecer” para reducir deudas de casi 60 mil pesos a productores del campo

In Mexico, approximately 70,000 agricultural producers were carrying debts with the National Financial Institution for Agricultural Development. For years, these financial institutions intimidated people who owed money, using threats and pressure to collect on their debts.

However, this week, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the program ‘Volver a Crecer’ (Grow Again). It’s a social initiative designed to free agricultural producers from these debts. According to Infobae, the program offers multiple pathways. Some will get their debts completely forgiven with official settlement letters that clear them with credit bureaus. Others get options for payment restructuring or discounts. For those facing lawsuits, the program includes procedures to end legal proceedings and release any guarantees they posted.

Once farmers are cleared, they’re eligible for new credit from commercial banks and other financial institutions.

A Federal Judge just told the Kennedy Center to stop using Trump’s name.

This week, the Kennedy Center began removing all references to Trump from the building after the president decided to add his name without proper authorization.

According to U.S. News, a federal Judge ruled that the name had been added illegally. The judge blocked the administration from closing the venue for major renovations planned to start in July. For his part, Trump announced he was backing away from the project entirely and making arrangements to relinquish control to Congress.

Finally, in the world of science and medicine, scientists have just reversed diabetes in Mice. Clinical trials are next.

Did you know type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease? The body attacks its own insulin-producing cells, and without insulin, blood sugar becomes uncontrollable. For decades, scientists have imagined replacing those lost cells. But growing functional insulin-producing cells from stem cells has been unreliable and inconsistent.

Until now.

Researchers in Sweden, publishing in Stem Cell Reports, developed a method to create insulin-producing cells from human stem cells that actually work. The cells respond strongly to glucose and regulate blood sugar. When transplanted into diabetic mice, they gradually restored the animals’ ability to control their blood sugar for several months, according to Science Daily.

“We have developed a method that reliably produces high-quality insulin-producing cells from multiple human stem cell lines,” says Per-Olof Berggren, a professor at Karolinska Institutet. “This opens up opportunities for future patient-specific cell therapies, which could reduce immune rejection.”
